There are times when I become painfully aware of how far I fall short.
Maybe I said something I shouldn’t have said. Maybe I knew what God wanted me to do and chose my own way anyway. Maybe an old struggle I thought I’d conquered showed up again, and suddenly I’m staring at myself wondering:
Seriously? We’re still doing this?
Then Romans 3 gives us some uncomfortable news.
“All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.”
Well.
At least I’m not alone.
But Paul isn’t trying to leave us buried beneath the weight of our failure. He’s showing us why we desperately need what comes next.
We fall short.
Jesus doesn’t.
And through faith in Him, God gives us something we could never earn for ourselves:
Righteousness.
Today’s Saving Grace of God
Romans 3:21–26 (ESV)
“But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law, although the Law and the Prophets bear witness to it—the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe.
For there is no distinction: for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus,
whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith.
This was to show God’s righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins.
It was to show his righteousness at the present time, so that he might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.”
Setting the Scene
Paul spends the opening chapters of Romans dismantling one of humanity’s favorite ideas:
Surely some of us are better than others.
Jew and Gentile had different backgrounds, different histories, and different relationships with God’s law. It would have been easy for one group to look across the aisle and decide the other was the real problem.
Paul removes that option.
“All have sinned.”
Not some.
Not those people over there.
All.
Every one of us stands in need of God’s grace.
But Romans 3 takes a beautiful turn with two little words:
“But now…”
After explaining the problem we could never solve, Paul reveals what God has done.
A righteousness from God has been revealed apart from our ability to keep the law perfectly.
It comes through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe.
We are justified by grace.
Redeemed through Christ.
And God remains completely righteous while declaring sinners righteous through faith in His Son.
The solution to our sin wasn’t found in us becoming better.
It was found in Jesus.
Reflection
I think sometimes I understand that I’m saved by grace and then accidentally spend the rest of my Christian life trying to prove I deserved it.
Surely I can’t be the only one.
I know Jesus saved me.
But then I fail.
Again.
And suddenly I’m mentally dragging out every mistake I’ve ever made like I’m preparing evidence for the prosecution.
Exhibit A: Remember this?
Exhibit B: And what about that?
Meanwhile, Romans 3 is telling me something entirely different.
“Justified by his grace as a gift.”
A gift.
Not a paycheck.
Not a reward for improved behavior.
Not God’s bonus program for Christians who finally get their act together.
A gift.
And here’s where this passage becomes even more extraordinary.
God didn’t save us by pretending our sin wasn’t serious.
Sin separates us from a holy God. Justice matters because God is just.
So how can a just God forgive guilty people?
Paul points directly to Jesus.
Christ became the sacrifice for our sin. His blood paid the price we could never pay.
At the cross, God didn’t ignore justice.
Jesus satisfied it.
That’s why Paul’s final words in this passage are so powerful.
God is:
“just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.”
He is still just.
Sin still mattered.
The debt was still owed.
But instead of requiring us to pay a debt we could never satisfy, Jesus stepped into our place.
I don’t think we can really understand grace until we understand that.
Grace isn’t God shrugging His shoulders at our sin.
Grace is Jesus carrying it.
And suddenly the words “all have sinned” don’t leave me hopeless.
Because the same passage that tells me how desperately I need a Savior also tells me exactly where to find Him.
I don’t have to hide my failures from God.
He already knows them.
I don’t have to convince Him that I’ve finally become worthy.
I haven’t.
Jesus is worthy.
And through faith in Him, God gives me the righteousness I could never manufacture for myself.
So when I fail—and I will—I don’t have to run away from God carrying my shame.
I can run toward Him.
Not because my sin doesn’t matter.
But because Jesus already carried it to the cross.
Short Prayer
Lord God, I feel overwhelmed by Your grace and mercy, especially when I focus on all the ways I fail You.
Sometimes I look at my sin so closely that I lose sight of my Savior.
When that happens, turn my eyes back to Jesus.
Remind me that He has already paid the debt I could never pay. Your love is greater than my failure, Your mercy reaches farther than my shame, and Your grace is a gift I could never earn.
Thank You for being perfectly just and still making a way to justify someone like me.
Jesus, thank You for carrying my sin to the cross.
When I start dragging out the evidence against myself again, remind me that You already knew every charge—and You chose to save me anyway.
Thank You for never giving up on me.

When you fall short, do you find yourself running away from God in shame or toward Him in grace—and how might Romans 3 change that response?
Closing Encouragement
Yes.
All have sinned.
That includes you.
That includes me.
But Romans 3 doesn’t leave us standing before God with nothing but a list of everything we’ve done wrong.
It takes us to the cross.
There we discover that God did not ignore our sin.
Jesus paid for it.
God remains just.
And through faith in Christ, He becomes our justifier.
You don’t have to earn the righteousness Jesus already purchased for you.
Receive the gift.
