Some choices look simple until we have to make them. A conversation shifts toward gossip. An appealing opportunity asks us to compromise. A private habit begins shaping what we want. In moments like these, we may wish God would make the right path unmistakable.
Proverbs 6:23 reminds us that God’s Word is a lamp and a light for the choices in front of us. In its original setting, a father’s commandment and a mother’s teaching warn their son against a destructive path. As we read God’s Word, we’re also called to welcome its instruction and correction. We may not receive every answer we want, but we can follow what God has made clear.
Today’s Wisdom of God
Proverbs 6:23 (ESV)
“For the commandment is a lamp and the teaching a light, and the reproofs of discipline are the way of life,”
Setting the Scene
Proverbs 6 presents the counsel of a father urging his son to keep his father’s commandment and not forsake his mother’s teaching. He is told to bind this instruction on his heart and keep it close. The words are meant to guide him as he moves through ordinary life—when he walks, when he lies down, and when he wakes. This wisdom isn’t treated as something to consult only during a crisis. It is meant to remain with him.
Verse 23 explains why this instruction matters. The commandment is a lamp, the teaching is a light, and disciplined correction marks the way of life. The verses that follow address the danger of adultery and the destruction connected with it. In that context, the lamp does more than offer general encouragement. It exposes a dangerous path before the next step is taken. Wise instruction warns, corrects, and guides because our choices have real consequences.
Reflection
A lamp doesn’t walk the road for us, but it lets us see the road. In the same way, God’s Word identifies what is right, warns us about what is wrong, and reveals dangers we may otherwise excuse or overlook. The instruction in this passage is protective. It helps us recognize that a choice can be attractive and still be destructive, socially accepted and still be wrong, private and still shape our lives. The lamp may not show us everything we want to know about tomorrow, but it gives us light to obey what God has made clear today.
We don’t always welcome that light. Sometimes we want direction when we’re confused but resist it when the answer confronts something we desire. We may look for a softer interpretation, delay obedience, or compare ourselves with someone whose compromise appears to have no immediate consequences. Yet Proverbs calls “the reproofs of discipline” the way of life. Reproof names what needs to change, and discipline trains us to choose a wiser path. Correction may be uncomfortable, but discomfort doesn’t make it unkind. When Scripture exposes our choices, attitudes, or habits, we can listen and turn instead of making excuses.
This matters in ordinary decisions long before a visible crisis develops. God’s Word can guide what we watch, how we speak about another person, what we do with money, how we handle a private message, and whether we keep a commitment when breaking it would be easier. Staying near the light requires more than remembering a verse after trouble begins. We can read Scripture regularly, consider what it actually says, pray for understanding, and seek wise help when we’re unsure how to apply it. A study Bible, reading plan, journal, or Bible app may help us pay attention, but those tools aren’t the light itself. They’re useful when they help us engage faithfully with God’s Word.
This verse doesn’t promise a detailed answer for every decision. It shows us the value of instruction we can follow and correction we’re willing to receive. When the light reveals that we’re heading in the wrong direction, we don’t have to keep going. We can admit where we’ve been wrong, accept correction, and take the next faithful step. That is part of walking in the way of life.
Short Prayer
God, thank You for the instruction and correction You give us through Your Word. We admit that we don’t always welcome the light when it exposes something in us. Please make us willing to listen. Show us where we’re wrong, help us turn from harmful choices, and guide our next steps. Teach us to trust that Your wisdom is good and we desperately need both the lamp and the light. In Your glorious name we pray. Amen.
