There are certain verses in Scripture that become the foundation for everything else we believe. For me, Romans 1:16-17 is one of those passages. Every time I read Paul’s words, I’m reminded that my confidence has never rested in how well I perform or how perfectly I obey. It rests entirely in the gospel of Jesus Christ—the power of God that saves everyone who believes.
These verses introduce one of the central truths of the Christian faith: “The righteous shall live by faith.” Our relationship with God has never been built on performance or perfection. It has always rested on trusting the One who keeps His promises. That truth doesn’t just secure our eternity—it changes the way we live every day.
Today’s Saving Grace of God
Romans 1:16-17 (ESV)
“For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith, as it is written, ‘The righteous shall live by faith.'”
Setting the Scene
Paul wrote his letter to the believers in Rome before he had ever visited them. The church was made up of both Jewish and Gentile Christians learning to live together under the lordship of Christ. Before addressing the practical questions they faced, Paul began with the foundation of the gospel itself. He wanted them to understand that salvation had never depended on heritage, religious works, or human effort. It came through faith in Jesus Christ alone—a message powerful enough to save anyone who believes.
This passage, opening the heart of the letter, sets the tone for everything that follows. It points to Christ as the ultimate revelation of God’s righteousness—something that no human effort can achieve, but that is freely given through faith. Paul’s words assure us that the gospel is not just good advice but the power of God to bring life and peace to all who believe.
Reflection
When Paul says, “For I am not ashamed of the gospel,” we are reminded that faith is not about hiding or feeling embarrassed by our beliefs. Instead, it is a bold trust in God’s saving work through Jesus. This confidence comes from knowing that the gospel—God’s good news—is the source of true life. It’s not about what we do but about what Christ has done for us.
The phrase “the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith” suggests a continuous journey. Our faith is both the starting point and the ongoing path of living in right standing with God. This righteousness is not something we manufacture but something we receive as we trust God day by day.
Living by faith means embracing uncertainty with hope, knowing that God’s promises hold true even when circumstances challenge us. It means shifting our focus from our failures to God’s faithfulness. In my own walk, I’ve found that leaning on faith brings peace amid anxiety and strength when life feels overwhelming. It reminds me that I am not alone, and that God’s righteousness covers my imperfections.
This passage encourages us to live with the assurance that faith is the key to a vibrant, enduring relationship with God. It invites us to step beyond fear and doubt into a life shaped by trust—a life where God’s righteousness transforms us from the inside out.
Short Prayer
Lord, help us to live boldly in faith, trusting Your righteousness instead of our own strength. When doubts creep in, remind us of Your unfailing love and the power of Your gospel to save and sustain us. May we never be ashamed to share the hope we have in You. In Your Son’s holy name we pray. Amen.
Reflection Question
How can I deepen my trust in God’s righteousness today, especially when I feel uncertain or weak?
Closing Encouragement
Faith is not just a one-time decision but a daily choice to rely on God’s promises. When we live by faith, we experience the peace and freedom that come from knowing our righteousness is secured in Christ. No matter what challenges arise, this faith sustains us and guides us into a life filled with hope and purpose. Let’s embrace this truth together, allowing faith to shape every part of our journey.
