John doesn’t begin his Gospel with the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem. Instead, he reaches back beyond creation itself, introducing us to the eternal Word who was with God in the beginning and who is God. Before there was light, before there was life, before there was creation, Christ already was. These opening verses reveal not only who Jesus is, but why He alone can offer the salvation and hope every human heart longs for.
John’s opening words are some of the most beautiful and profound in all of Scripture. They don’t simply tell us about Jesus—they introduce us to the One who has always existed, the One through whom life itself began. As we read these verses today, we’ll discover that the life found in Christ is also the light that overcomes every darkness we encounter.
Today’s Saving Grace of God
John 1:1-5 ESV
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.”
Setting the Scene
The Apostle John, the disciple probably closest to Jesus, wrote this Gospel later in the first century. His audience included both Jewish and Gentile believers who were grappling with understanding Jesus’ divine identity and the significance of His life, death, and resurrection. At a time when many false teachings were circulating, John wanted to clearly affirm that Jesus is truly God incarnate—the eternal Word who was with God from the beginning and through whom everything was made.
John’s opening words echo the creation account in Genesis, linking Jesus directly to the very act of creation. This connection is powerful because it shows that Jesus is not just a historical figure but the eternal life-giver. The passage also points toward Christ’s role as the light that pierces spiritual darkness, a promise of salvation for all who believe.
Reflection
I’ll be honest. The phrase “In him was life, and the life was the light of men” gives me chills. When John speaks of life, he isn’t talking only about the breath in our lungs. He’s describing the eternal life that comes from God Himself—a life that changes us from the inside out. John then calls that life “light,” and I love that picture. Light reveals what darkness tries to hide. It gives direction when we can’t see the path ahead and reminds us that truth always shines brighter than deception.
When I think about my own experiences, it’s easy to relate to the darkness John describes. Darkness can represent confusion, fear, sin, or pain, all of which can feel overwhelming. But this passage has always given me such hope. It’s a promise that the darkness has not, and cannot, overcome the light. It’s a promise that even when life feels bleak or uncertain, the light of Christ remains undefeated and available to all of us.
The older I get, the more I realize that darkness doesn’t always disappear overnight. Sometimes God simply reminds us to keep walking toward the Light. Every time I choose to turn back to Him rather than to my fears or my own understanding, He faithfully meets me there. That’s the hope John is describing—not that darkness never exists, but that it will never have the final word.
Short Prayer
Jesus, thank You! Thank You for being the life and the light that never fades. I find such hope in knowing that You have always been, from before the beginning of creation, and that You willingly chose the cross so I could walk in Your light each day, trusting that no darkness can overcome it. Shine brightly in our hearts and guide our steps as we follow You. In Your holy and precious name, I pray. Amen.
Reflection Question
How can we invite the life and light of Christ to shine more fully in the areas of our lives where darkness feels strongest?
Closing Encouragement
Remember, the light that shines in the darkness is not a fading glow but a steady, unyielding source of hope and life. No matter what shadows we face, Christ’s light is stronger and will never be overcome. We are invited to live in that light daily, allowing it to transform us and guide us forward. Embracing this truth brings peace and confidence that we are never alone, and that true life is found only in Him.
