We often think wisdom begins with having enough information, making a careful plan, or knowing what to do next. Proverbs 9:10 begins somewhere else. It tells us that wisdom begins with the fear of the Lord—with recognizing who God is and allowing that truth to shape the way we live.
That can be difficult when we’re tired, disappointed, or facing a decision without a clear answer. We may wish God would simply show us how everything will turn out. This verse doesn’t give us a map for every circumstance. It gives us a clear starting place: we turn toward the Lord, honor him as God, and seek the insight that comes from knowing him.
Today’s Wisdom of God
Proverbs 9:10 (ESV)
“The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom,
and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight.”
Setting the Scene
Proverbs 9 presents two very different calls. Wisdom prepares a feast and calls the simple to leave foolish ways and walk in understanding. Folly also calls out, but her path leads somewhere entirely different. The chapter places these voices side by side so that we can see the importance of choosing which one we will hear.
Proverbs 9:10 stands within that contrast and tells us where wisdom begins. Wisdom isn’t merely intelligence, experience, or the ability to avoid mistakes. Its beginning is the fear of the Lord, and insight is connected to knowing the Holy One. Before Proverbs points us toward wise choices, it points us toward God himself.
Reflection
The fear of the Lord means that we don’t treat God lightly. We recognize that he is holy, that his authority is real, and that his understanding is greater than ours. This isn’t a call to live in constant panic. It is a call to reverence—to take God seriously enough that his character, his words, and his ways carry more weight than our impulses. Wisdom begins when we stop placing ourselves at the center of what is true and good. We come before God with humility and acknowledge that we need him to teach us. The second half of the verse makes the connection clear: knowledge of the Holy One is insight. Wisdom is more than collecting facts. It begins with knowing and honoring God.
This can feel especially hard when life is painful or uncertain. When we’re grieving, frightened, lonely, or worn down, our thoughts can become scattered. A decision that once seemed simple may suddenly feel impossible. Proverbs 9:10 gives us a place to begin when we don’t know what comes next. We can acknowledge that God is holy and that our understanding is limited. We can bring our questions to him without pretending they’ve already been answered. We can fear the Lord and still weep. We can honor him while admitting that we’re confused. We can seek wisdom while also receiving help from trustworthy pastors, friends, counselors, doctors, or others equipped to support us. Needing care isn’t a failure of faith.
In ordinary life, fearing the Lord may look quieter than we expect. It may mean pausing before answering when our words are likely to wound. It may mean refusing a dishonest shortcut even when honesty costs us something. It may mean opening Scripture before letting every other voice tell us what matters most. Sometimes it means admitting, “We don’t know what to do,” and asking God for wisdom to take the next faithful step rather than demanding the whole plan at once. We can ask simple questions: Does this choice honor God? Does it agree with what he has said? Are we acting with humility, or are we trying to control what we cannot control? These questions won’t remove every complication. Some decisions will still require time, prayer, wise counsel, and patient attention. We don’t have to begin with perfect certainty. We begin by turning our attention toward the Lord.
The word “beginning” also keeps us humble. Reverence for God isn’t one item to check off before moving on to more advanced wisdom. It remains the foundation. Experience, education, and good advice can help us, but none of them can replace knowing who God is and trusting what He has said. When we recognize that we’ve trusted our own judgment more than him, we can turn back. We can listen again, remain teachable, and let the knowledge of the Holy One shape our choices.
Short Prayer
Holy Father, we need Your wisdom. We often lean on our own understanding or look for certainty in places that can’t give it. Remind us to come to You. Teach us to honor You and seek You first. When we’re tired or confused, sad or grieving, scared or alone, help us begin with You. Give us humility for the next step and courage to seek trustworthy help when we need it. In Your name we pray. Amen.
Reflection Question
Where might we need to begin with reverence for God instead of waiting until we understand everything?
Closing Encouragement
We don’t need to know every answer before we turn toward God. We can begin where Proverbs tells us to begin: by honoring the Lord and seeking the insight that comes from knowing him.
